I am a 50-year-old mum of 2 adult kids and have been married to my husband for 27 years. I work as a School Administration Officer in Lismore and have been overweight since my early 20’s. The weight kept piling on until I tipped the scales at 138kgs! Sure I tried a few times to diet but with little to no success.
I needed help. SERIOUS HELP!
Everyday tasks left me physically exhausted, frustrated, and drained. Standing on my feet all day would cause my feet and ankles to swell, rolling over in bed was a job in itself, not to mention trying to tie my shoelaces. Headaches, back pain, irritable bowel problems, and difficulty sleeping were all the norm.
I would avoid anything that involved a swimming costume or activities of a physical nature. Retail therapy with my daughter left me looking for a seat and I would hide behind the camera rather than in front. My self-esteem was shot and the more people mentioned my size and the health implications, the lower it sank. I was in a sinkhole with no escape plan.
After attending my cousin’s wedding, who had gone through the Cambridge program, I was intrigued and impressed with how much weight she had lost. It took me another couple of years before I was in the right headspace to accept the challenge and follow in her footsteps to change my life.
YES, there were tears. Yes, there were doubts of failure and fear of letting go of what was familiar. BUT I also knew I had to change my ways or my body was going to fail me.
So, I started my journey in November 2019 and after going through Christmas and Easter twice over, not to mention the whole Covid mess, I have remained strong (mostly) to create the “new me”.
I now enjoy my aqua aerobics and gym sessions and now lap my elderly parents on our walks (whom I couldn’t keep up with to start with). I now do serious retail therapy with my daughter, no seat required. I no longer suffer from headaches, or back pain, etc. After years of being BIG, it is all a new feeling that I am ever so thankful for.
The support from family and friends and especially my wonderful consultant Karen, who whenever I was struggling picked me up with her words of encouragement, has given me a new lease on life. I feel energised, confident, and excited for the future.
I only have one regret…..I should have started sooner!
